The Johnston Hotel on Main Street, c.1890

Lassen County – Woman’s Wonderland
July 6th, 1885

One reason why women here in Lassen are better treated, than in any place within my extensive ken, is that they are like hen’s teeth.

Fully two thirds the inhabitants of this county are men whose domestic sweetness wastes upon the desert air, because all the women are married or too young to be.

The woods are fall of rich old bachelors who want wives. Lonely lives have enhanced their bashfulness until they are backward about coming forward.

There are countless young bachelors too, who want wives, but are too busy making money to spare time for sparking. What was Mahomet’s famous remark about the mountain?

To combine health, comfort and economy in an attractive home requires good taste and hard work with head and hands. Perhaps because of scarcity it is that the services are paid approximate to appreciation. Working housekeepers get $20 to $30 a month “and found.”

Poultry-raisers, housemaids, seamstresses, dairymaids easily get employment at similar rates, but seldom remain long on wages as some man is sure to come courting around.

The largest sawmill in the county is operated by a woman but inducements are not extended to women alone.
