Eagle Lake from the Marina and Gallatin Beach ca.1936

Missing Priest Found at Eagle Lake
May 29th, 1927

Reverend P.J. McCarthy, rector of the Susanville Catholic church who was feared to have been lost in the storm which raged over Eagle lake yesterday, and for whom a search was instituted which extended into the night, was found late last night at the automobile which had taken him to the lake, awaiting the return of the other members of the fishing party.

With Bert Bristol and W.M. Quinn, Susanville business men, Father McCarthy was in a small rowboat while Bristol and Quinn had a motor equipped boat. When the storm arose Bristol and Quinn had a motor-equipped boat.

When the storm arose Bristol and Quinn made for the opposite side of the lake while Father McCarthy rowed back to where the automobiles had been left.

He spent several anxious hours awaiting the return of his comrades, who in the meantime had gone to the other shore, walked twelve miles to Bieber and then telephoned to Susanville to inquire as to the safety of the clergyman.

Father McCarthy having not returned to his home, searching parties immediately left for the lake and there they met him, still looking for his fishing partners.
