New Chief of Police to be Sworn in at Ceremony Today

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

A new era in Susanville law enforcement officially begins today as Tom Downing is sworn in as the city’s new Chief of Police.

Chief Downing was appointed by the City Council at their May 2nd meeting, and officially assumes the mantle in a ceremony at City Hall this morning.

Downing has served the community in various law enforcement roles since becoming a Police Department Explorer Scout in 1987, while still attending Lassen High.

Throughout the years Downing’s assignments have run the law enforcement gamut; as investigator, member of the Narcotics Task Force, the SWAT team and a member of the department’s command staff.

He was promoted to Captain in 2007, working under Chief Jeff Atkinson who retired earlier this year.

“Rising to the position of Chief of Police has been my aspiration since the age of seventeen,” says the new Chief. “I am truly thankful to all of those who have supported me over the years. Without the assistance of others, I would not have achieved such a lofty goal.”

Downing’s swearing-in ceremony will be held at 11:00a.m. in the City Council Chambers at 66 North Lassen Street and is open to the public.
